HRDO Conducts First Face-to-Face Performance Coaching Workshop
Date Posted:

Spearheaded by the Position Classification and Staff Development Section, the Human Resources and Development Office (HRDO) conducted the first face-to-face Performance Coaching Workshop for the second batch of supervisors and administrative staff of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs on May 16, 2022. This is part of the Performance Coaching Caravan launched by HRDO earlier this year that targets different units, colleges and offices across the university to improve the workplace performance of employees with the help of coaching interventions from their respective supervisors and colleagues. Previous Performance Coaching Workshop for OVCA supervisors (Batch 1) including the initial orientation to ExeComm were conducted through Zoom because of the heightened restrictions during the pandemic

After Ms. Mabel Jimera of PCSD introduced the resource speaker’s and listed  his long list of impressive accolades and credentials in and out of the university, Asst. Prof. Jyro Triviño of the Department of Agri-Business Management and Entrepreneurship, CEM took the floor and kicked off the coaching workshop with a series of activities, videos, and nuanced discussions that triggered participation and engagement. Asst. Prof. Triviño then proceeded to define coaching, differentiate it from mentoring and counseling and enumerate the benefits of coaching. He also discussed at length the four core coaching skills which include Keen Observation to notice subtle non-verbal cues and body language, Empathic Listening instead of simply hearing, Effective Feedback that is constructive and delivered in a positive tone as well as Guided Inquiry that selects the right type of questions.

After lunch, he expounded on the GROW Coaching Model where coaches are asked to set achievable goals, come to terms with reality, identify the possible options that can be explored and then finally pinpoint the different ways forward and what they will do to achieve the goals that they have set during the first stage of the coaching model. The participants were then divided into smaller groups where they simulated a coaching session and tackled the different issues or problems that they actually experience in their workplace using the new skills and knowledge that they have learned.

Supervising Administrative Officer Ricardo Amiel Reveche wrapped things up with some food for thought, inspiring words and closing remarks reminding everyone that there are many ways to address performance issues and other problems within the office. Performance Coaching is an excellent option that can be utilized to enhance overall productivity in the workplace and help everyone reach the fullest of their capabilities and peak of their potential.

After the successful pilot session of face-to-face performance coaching workshop, HRDO will move forward with the Performance Coaching Caravan throughout the rest of the year with high hopes that this will increase efficiency and foster camaraderie in all the units, colleges and offices of UPLB.
